The Florida Ornithological Society is a Florida not-for-profit corporation established in 1972 to promote field ornithology in Florida and to facilitate contact between professional and amateur ornithologists and birders in the state. Our members are an essential part of our organization. Help us promote field ornithology, bird science, and the appreciation of birds in Florida.

All people interested in birds in Florida should be part of FOS.

To become a member by mail, please print the Membership Application Form and complete the form. Please include a check for dues made out to FOS and mail to the address below.

Who We Are

We carry out a variety of functions to further ornithological research and promote enagement with bird enthusiasts in the state. Below are our key priorities for our society, and our members make everything we do possible.

Publish our peer-reviewed scientific journal, The Florida Field Naturalist, and our quarterly membership newsletter, The Snail Kite

Give out grants and awards on a competitive basis to students and professionals for research and education related to birds in Florida

Maintain a records committee to evaluate reports of wild birds in Florida and keep a checklist of Florida’s avifauna.

Disseminate special publications related to the birds of Florida

Hold meetings, scientific seminars, and fiel trips to engage membership and other’s interested in Florida’s birds

Support projects that collect data on natural history of Florida animals for scientific purposes

Honorary Members

Honorary Members are recognized by the Florida Ornithological Society for their significant contributions to the scientific knowledge about birds and wildlife in Florida and their generous and noteworthy participation in our organization.
